Although an established city since Roman settlement in 43 AD, the city only rose to prominence after the Norman Conquest in the 11th century when William the Conqueror chose Westminster Abbey for his coronation – and since then almost every English and British monarch has been crowned there. Despite disasters such as the Great Fire of London in 1666, the 17th century Plague and the destruction caused by the ‘Blitz’ in World War Two, London has continued to survive and prosper through its spirit and determination. Nowadays it has some world-class museums and art galleries and an entertainment scene unrivaled almost anywhere else in the world – there’s an overwhelming choice of theaters, bars, pubs and restaurants.
